How to Change Battery in a Honeywell Thermostat

The battery cover or battery compartment of a Honeywell thermostat is not labeled, leaving many consumers unsure of replacing it. While this information can easily be found in the owner's manual, it is often discarded after purchase. If you have a Honeywell digital thermostat, it will probably have a monitor that notifies you when it has a low battery.

How to Change Battery in a Honeywell Thermostat

Instructions for Honeywell thermostat battery replacement:

  • Slide off the Honeywell thermostat battery cover plate. Depending on your model, this battery compartment cover plate is located on the thermostat's left or right side.
  • Remove the old battery. Some Honeywell thermostats use an AA battery or AA alkaline batteries, while others use AAA batteries. Also, you will need two or three backup batteries, depending on the model.
  • Insert the new batteries into the corresponding housing. Pay special attention to the negative (-) and positive (+) poles of the battery. The protruding (positive) side of the battery is connected to its pole without a spring; on the other hand, the smooth (negative) side is connected to the pole with a spring.
  • Slide the cover back into place to secure the batteries.
